GE came up a way to cram more data onto a CD like disc that could store over 500GB, about 20 Blu-ray discs or 100 DVD* [1]. They may have a name for already, but i think they should give it a fancy name such as GED.
The article of Information Week mentioned that it is GE will market it to archiving company first before the general public. The reason I think so is because of the cost. It probably costs more than buying 20 Blu-ray discs, making it too expensive for what most people would be willing to buy. Below I took the prices from my favorite store.
Cost:
CD-RW with slim Jewel cases 10 for $14; $1.40 each
CD-R with slim Jewel cases 10 for $8; $0.80 each
DVD+R with slim Jewel cases; 10 for $12; $1.20 each
DVD-R with slim Jewel cases; 10 for $12; $1.20 each
DVD+RW with slim Jewel cases; 10 for $18; $1.80 each
DVD-RW with slim Jewel cases; 10 for $14; $1.40 each
Blu-ray-R (believe to come with a case); 1 for $20; **
GE disc; not on market; estimate selling more than $400 each.
You can probably buy cheaper if purchasing them in bulk of 100 discs. I chose 10 disk to make it a better comparison with Blu-ray and the GE disc since it is hard to imagine buying a bulk of 100 of those.
Blu-ray is still new. The price is selling way above a DVD disc. It will come down a next few years when it becomes more common.
Also an issue with price, how many times I made mistakes when burning CD, but I am not too regretful of tossing it away when that happens. My home computer asks too many questions whenever I burn a CD, and I have to refigure each time what to do by trial-and-error.
But can you imagine if you make a mistaking burning a Blu-ray disc or a GE disc? It would be one expensive mistake. Not something to play around with.

http://www.informationweek.com/news/storage/systems/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=217200278* One Blu-Ray disc is equiv to 5 DVDs.
** $20 just for a blank disc would make buying a Blu-ray movie not that expensive. Generally a movie on Blu-ray is selling about $30. Maybe the movie studios got a discount with Sony on waiving the licensing fee for Blu-ray.
I didn't know that DVD has the +R and -R. -R was the first version and so a more common and is supported by the older players. +R is the newer version and is better but may not be supported in the older DVD players.
